Each year for the textile degree show, students are asked to raise a certain sum of money to contribute to the organisation of the show. Yesterday, myself and 5 other students packed bags at Marks and Spencer in Newcastle and raised a fantastic £341. This amount greatly succeeded our expectations and we were overwhelmed by people's generosity and kindness to donate. As this day was a triumph we hope to arrange another bag packing event later in the year so we can contribute more money to the textile fund on our behalf.

Sampling
So I've spent the past 2 weeks in the print room, I'm talking 12 hour days busily working on producing colour samples for my prints, with sampling being one of my favourite stages of the design process. The hours actually go pretty quickly, as I love screen printing and I am in my elements in the print room, an area in which I work very confidently. I already have 4 final prints, all different designs. The deadline for my minor project is this coming Friday, so pictures of my complete collection will be coming very soon, but for now enjoy a few pictures of my colour samples.

Fabric All Prepped For Printing
Here's a sneak peek at some of the coloured fabric and textured backgrounds I will be working with. As my designs are aimed at a high market level I will be working predominantly on silk - Silk Habotai and Spun Sandwashed Silk, both of which dye beautifully. I actually consider it a skill in its own right to evenly dye a piece of fabric with no blotches on it. Colours incluce: Claret Red, Antique Gold, Royal Blue, Violet, Magenta, Emerald, Buttercup Yellow, Bottle Green, Aubergine, Turquoise, Brilliant Orange, Blackcurrant and Raspberry. These fabric dyes are both Acid dyes (either Kenanthrols and Ill Acids) or Procions, but I find that Acid dyes are more intense.

Festival of Britain Anniversary Exhib - Southbank Centre - Dissertation Research
So I'm currently working on my dissertation which is, as previously stated, on the Legacy of the Festival of Britain on Modern Design. As of today everything is going well, research is done and i'm on with the task of writing, which I am really enjoying. I visited the Southbank Centre's Festival of Britain 60th anniversary exhibition. Here are a few of the pictures I snapped.
