Tartan proves to be the protagonist fabric of choice for Fall 17, seen widely across the runway and spawning legions of fans on the street. The likes of Bella, Gigi, Jenna Coleman and Iris Law have all been snapped wearing multiple tartan outfits. Styling of such material comes in many different guises - there's the preppy homage to the 90's (think Cher Horowitz in Clueless), then there's the nod to punk with edgy tartan pants teamed with black mesh tops, then of course there is classic British heritage with an iconic Burberry printed trench. Talking of Burberry, the fashion brand has recently revived their check print in a big way by bringing back their old school check on caps and coats. Ok so the Burberry check never really left the fashion radar, but the full head-to-toe look is now more likely to be seen on Rihanna or Adwoa Aboah rather than Daniella Westbrook circa 2002 (*gasps in horror). Perhaps the fashion brand was picking up on the love of all things 90's in fashion at the moment and sought to once again make a bold sartorial statement with their iconic plaid. Aside from Burberry, other fashion houses who have embraced the tartan look for Fall include Tommy Hilfiger, Balenciaga and Victoria Beckham. And finally, we couldn't talk tartan without mentioning the queen or tartan herself, Dame Vivienne Westwood who has championed this look for decades.
Whilst at first glance, tartan can seem a daring look to opt for it need not be so scary. Of course if making a statement is your thing, then go all out with a full on tartan look - perhaps even a tartan suit from the likes of Victoria Beckham or Junya Watanabe. However, if you want something a little more wearable for everyday then a mini skirt can be a great option. If you want MAJOR nods to Scottish heritage then opt for a tartan mini skirt, Miu Miu have a great style this season, but if this is too much for your personal style then a classic A-line mini is your best bet. Colour can also be key to nailing this look in your preferred way. If you want the traditional look then for sure go for red/black tartan, but for something more modern go for white, teal or purple - you are still achieving the trend-driven look for Fall but the pieces will be more likely to stand the test of time in your wardrobe over the coming months and future seasons. Here is my pick of the best luxury and highstreet tartan pieces.
