Fall 16 Trend - Velvet

As far as fabrics go, it doesn't really get more sumptuous than velvet. Making a big impact on the A/W 16 catwalks back in February, this season velvet comes in an array of rich Autumnal hues. Ranging from Bordeaux to copper, midnight blue to mustard - these colours add an injection of 'on trend' style to your wardrobe whilst remaining sophisticated at the same time. Designers including: Haider Ackermann, Valentino, Alberta Ferretti and Prada sent models down the runway wearing both day wear and evening wear made from this luxe fabric, proving that velvet need not just be for evening attire. Some designers even went so far as adding embroidery for the ultimate high fashion look. See below for runway inspiration...
So how can you inject this seasonal fabric into your wardrobe? As we saw on the catwalk, luxury brands have majorly got on board with this trend - but it's not just ready to wear. You can shop velvet accessories just as readily with shoes and handbags being the number one choice. You can opt for full velvet styling or just a couple of pieces to add flair to your outfit. I have put together a selection of the best the luxury market has to offer. Go to designers - Marco de Vincenzo (for the best shoes), Saint Laurent and Altuzarra (for tailoring) and Maje (for affordable day-to-night dresses). Dare I even suggest these pieces would be great for Christmas?
Taking inspiration from these celebrities and fashion editors, see how you can style your velvet clothing to have maximum street style kudos. Layering velvet with oversized cotton shirts will create the ultimate sartorial statement!

Milan Fashion Week - S/S 17 - Top 10

No sooner has Milan Fashion Week drawn to a close and my review is already here! Milan has been my favourite city so far and selecting my top 10 collections proved tricky, but after consideration here are my top choices...
Prada
This was the most stripped back Prada show we have seen in a few seasons. Miuccia's continued love of art-deco graphic prints was once again clear to see and this season came in block primary colours. High waisted shorts teamed with midriff baring crop tops and pull over knitted vests were a strong look, along with bold checked prints. The main key feature from the collection however has to be the use of ostrich feathers - seen on skirts shoes, dresses and trouser hems.
Gucci
Alessandro Michele never ceases to amaze with his showstopping runway collections and for SS17 it was the 70's/80's meets the Renaissance. Sky-high platform heels in velvet were teamed with signature embroidered dresses made from delicate chiffon. Metallics were used to add a glam rock vibe to the collection, whilst layers of tulle and ruffles exaggerated shoulders. Prints were largely floral, what we have come to expect from Gucci as of late, and they had a vintage/antique feel to them. Once again this was an eclectic show which will no doubt have a-listers and fashion lovers alike scrambling to get their hands on.
Roberto Cavalli
There's no denying that Peter Dundas know's how to channel the spirit of the 70's, and this season was no different. Floor sweeping tiered gowns, off-the-shoulder ruffles, suede fringing and spaghetti strap dresses  - all made from beautiful silks, luxurious velvet, lace and vintage inspired denim. Patchwork prints were inspired by Najavo textiles and had metallic threads running through them. Flared trousers elongated the legs, especially when in striped fabric. Also worth noting are the embroidered skinny scarves - one trend that shows no sign of slowing down anytime soon.
Versace
With a distinct athletic feel to the collection, models strode down the runway in an array of everyday sportwear meets daywear pieces - led by Edie Campbell who opened the show in a skintight bodysuit. Tech fabrics were key to the collection adding to the overall sporty vibe. Nylon trackpants with drawstring waists and zipper details were a constant throughout. Graphic checkerboard scarf prints made a bold statement against the largely purple, green and ink blue colour palette. Signature slit detailing was present as was the use of colour blocked leather. Short embellished chainmail dresses closed the show. Sky high heels were mixed with Teva flatform sandals adding a more practical element to the collection.
Fendi
Ultra feminine nude coloured dresses with cut-outs were offset against bold stripes, but somehow it worked. A thoroughly modern collection which mixed traditional baroque brocade fabrics with super short dresses and sporty heels. Sheer blouses came with exquisite scalloped hems and pleat detailing. There was also a hint of the pajama trend which we have already seen this season, with silk striped shirt dresses that had exaggerated sleeves. An array of gilded gowns and coats closed the show, adding to the overall high fashion finish.
Etro
Etro is not a trend driven brand, they stick to their heritage and know exactly what their consumer wants. For SS17 there was a distinct nod to travel, with tapestry inspired prints that looked like they had been taken from antique rugs you would find at a street market in India. Another travel inspired print was a collage of images taken from 1920's expedition books. The juxtaposition between geometric shapes and the traditional patterns created a great balance between the contemporary and the old. Leather sandals and statement gold necklaces completed the look.
Marco de Vincenzo
Catching my eye as one of the most exciting fashion brands of the past few seasons, I always look forward to the Marco de Vincenzo show - I mean who can resist a lurex fringe? With an exceptional eye for pairing colours together and the use of metallics, this season de Vincenzo also played with texture. Ruffled lace sleeves, oversized fringed knitwear, velvet embroidery and string details all helped to create one of the most exciting collections from Milan. A vintage postcard depicting the Riviera became the main print in the show and was seen on coats and blouses, whilst a small scale daisy print was layered over stripes. Also worth noting are the shoes - for which de Vincenzo is fast becoming very well know for.
Philosophy di Lorenzo Serafini
The film The Blue Lagoon was the initial inspiration behind the collection. Dreamy floor sweeping gowns with ruffled hems answered all your summertime sartorial prayers. These came in the most beautiful floral printed fabrics, whilst some were more classic in white and soft pastel lilac. The prints in question were some of the best tropicals we have seen all season and the blue/yellow/blush colour combo was perfect.  Emphasis on the waist was also a key feature, with oversized leather belts and corsets - set to be a huge trend for SS17. Very notable also was the use of denim, cut with frayed edges to give a youthful feel to the pieces. Modern and romantic.
Dolce and Gabbana
It wouldn't be a Dolce and Gabbana collection without a serious nod to Italian culture. This season, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, created an array of uber fun prints: cocktail glasses, pasta, pizza, ice-cream cones and fish to name but a few. The matador style jackets with military detailing, in green and yellow, which opened the show were amongst my favourite pieces in the collection and created feelings of stylish power dressing. Everyday wardrobe staples such as jeans were given a serious high fashion finish, embellished to the nines with embroidered patches and gold hardware. Oh and you couldn't have a Dolce collection without some serious floral blooms.
Marni
There is always something so serene about a Marni collection, a fine art that Consuelo Castiglioni has mastered since founding the brand in 1994. Dresses with billowing sleeves came in the most beautiful subdued colours, whilst some were printed with micro florals and subtle textures. Plisse was integral to the collection, creating stunning silhouettes in the way in which it was draped. Drawstrings were used to create ruching effects on waists and cuffs. Overall an exceptional collection shunning trends in favour of something more timeless and classic.

Print Moodboard - Soundwaves

Putting a spin on traditional texture prints, 'Soundwaves' takes inspiration from the fine lines on a soundwaves diagram. Intertwining lines work well in numerous overlapping colours, creating depth and an almost 3D effect. Colours can be on the same spectrum to create a sophisticated feel or be contrasting to give the print a more upbeat and youthful edge. Tight stitches also work well over the print if the desire is to add a high fashion finish to the look. Silhouettes can be layered to reflect the disjointed lines. Key Designers: Edeline Lee and Giambattista Valli

London Fashion Week - S/S 17 - Top 10

Continuing my review of the SS17 collections, here is my look at LFW...
Mary Katrantzou
This season Mary took inspiration from her Greek heritage to create a collection full of showstopping prints. Having shied away from bold prints the past few seasons, putting a greater emphasis on embellishment, for SS17 the designer when back to her routes and incorporated classical Greek art into her collection. Combining these with trippy psychedelic 60's graphics led to a display of some real 'wow' prints. Throw in a dash of metallic, micro pleats and some perspex trims and you got a pretty perfect collection!
Peter Pilotto
Easy breezy billowing silhouettes flounced down the runway at the Peter Pilotto show. Voluminous dresses added drama to the collection and came in cool yellow and sky blue. Floral prints were loosely drawn and marked a change in style from the usual tightly constructed prints were are used to seeing from the design duo. Denim with embroidered patches teamed with gingham were polular looks. There was also an emphasis on decolletage.
Burberry
Ok, so strictly speaking this is the brand's A/W collection but given that Burberry have adopted the 'See-Now, Buy-Now' retail model (meaning that you can shop this entire collection now online and in-store) it was shown in and amongst the S/S17 shows. Virginia Woolf's novel Orlando was the inspiration behind this seasons offering, all the guests also received a copy. The Elizabethan era was referenced heavily, with ruffled collars and rich tapestry dresses. Another key trend to emerge from this collection, and one which will no doubt be widely copied on the highstreet, was the nonchalant pajama style shirts and trousers. The collection was rich in historical references and fabrics included: jacquard, velvet, silk, shearling and lace.
House of Holland
This season marks Henry Hollands 10th year at the helm of his eponymous brand. There is always a playful element to a House of Holland collection, not taking itself too seriously whilst still remaining commercial. Gingham was a big theme, and teamed with awesome neckties had a cowgirl-esque vibe. There were nods to the macro trend 'athleisure' in the form of trackpants and hoodies. What I loved the most was the Oriental style floral print, which was somewhat unexpected and sophisticated. Back also were the now iconic slogan tee's.

Preen by Thornton Bregazzi
More trippy vibes at the Preen show, with metallic fabrics and candy coloured ruffles. Inspiration was found in witchcraft...yes really! Pentagram motifs adorned many of the pieces in the collection adding a magical feel to it. Oversized plaid dresses, astrology motifs and a hint of punk spirit made for one of the best shows we saw in London.
Christopher Kane
'Make Do and Mend' was the title of Kane's SS17 collection. So how did this translate to the runway? Well, Kane looked back on his past collections for inspiration as well as reflecting on his childhood for points of reference. As always with Kane you get lots of interesting fabrics and textures: metallic lame, lace, net, fur, embroidery, applique and eyelets - all present and making a statement. Leopard prints added an edge to the collection, whilst a collage print made of old Polaroids was particularly cool. As this was the designers 10th year showing at LFW, he created a new copper lace mini dress inspired by his triumphant 2006 collection.
J.W.Anderson
As one of the key players at LFW the past few seasons, Jonathan Anderson once again claimed his stake on the British fashion scene. Quilting and pleating were two key features, as was loose tie-dye. Oversized knitwear with exaggerated rolled sleeves also made a big impact. The newly appointed creative director at Loewe is fast becoming one of the most influential designers in the world of fashion. The accessories are also worth noting as well.
Temperley London
When your parents own the legendary 'Cider Bus' at Glastonbury festival, its impossible not to be inspired by the draw of a summer festival. For SS17, Alice Temperley's collection imbued the spirit of carefree summer days. Dreamy sunset colours and hippie maxi dresses were both feminine and fun, whilst ombre silk dresses would make the perfect addition to your dream holiday wardrobe. The formula was nothing new, but it worked to perfection!
Erdem
There is always a poetic narrative to an Erdem show and this season was no different. This time around, Erdem Moralioglu referenced the discovery of a ship wreck with contents belonging to Jean Kerr, Countess of Roxburghe. Not many designers could turn such a poignant story into a 39-strong look collection - but that is exactly what Erdem did. 17th century floral prints, traditional woven silks and broderie anglaise ran through the collection. Signature grosgrain ribbon fastenings featured on many of the looks. A beautifully dramatic collection for Spring.
Roksanda
Colour-blocking at Roksanda is a given, but this season the designer also played with loosely drawn whimsical florals. Modern silhouettes and billowing silk dresses were sophisticated and sensual. Copper and bronze liquid silks flowed beautifully, whilst ostrich feathers added texture.

Stay tuned to my blog for my review of Milan Fashion Week, which I will be posting next Saturday. In the meantime, be sure to follow my Pinterest page for pictures of all the best and latest runway looks. (details below)

2016 Emmy Awards - Red Carpet

The 68th Primetime Emmy Awards have taken place tonight in Los Angeles. Held at the Microsoft Theatre, the awards celebrate the best of US prime time television. Who was your best dressed?
1. Michelle Dockery - Oscar de La Renta
2. Kristen Bell - Zuhair Murad
3. Sarah Hyland - Monique Lhuillier
4. Emilia Clarke - Atelier Versace
5. Laura Carmichael - Delpozo
6. Sofia Vergara - Versace
7. Kirsten Dunst - Givenchy Fall 16 Couture
8. Emily Ratajkowski - Zac Posen
9. Sarah Paulson - Prada
10. Sophie Turner - Valentino

My Best Dressed
Emilia Clarke wearing Versace - Whilst many guests opted for gowns with plunging necklines, embellishment and dramatic volume, Emilia's gown was somewhat understated in comparison but nonetheless it was stunning. The soft blush colour was the perfect choice against the Game of Thrones actresses skin tone and the detail on the bodice was beautiful.

Who was your best dressed?

New York Fashion Week - S/S 17 - Top 10

It is that time of year again...Fashion Month! As I do each season, I will be reviewing my top 10 collections from each city. First up is New York...
Altuzarra
"Joyous, Flirty and Fun" is how Joseph Altuzarra described his SS17 collection backstage. His starting point was the film 'Wild at Heart' by David Lynch, direct references of which included the python print and the chosen colour palette. Cute cherry and lemon prints adorned daywear and embroidered evening dresses. Altuzarra's signature ruffles were back once again on dresses, skirt hems and bralettes. My favourite piece in the collection? The bold floral printed dress. Beautiful!
Jason Wu
The starting point for this collection was the artist Ugo Rondinone, you will have probably seen his 'Seven Magic Mountains' installation across social media. Neon pops of colour were used as trims on dresses and coats, whilst fluorescent florals were embroidered onto feminine lace and tulle dresses. Sporty off-the shoulder dresses added a slight edge to the collection and made a contrast against the more soft, feminine pieces.
Prabal Gurung
For SS17, Gurung injected a nod to politics into his collection with famous speeches by notable women printed onto bias-cut dresses - very apt given the current presidential race for The White House in the USA. Slashed dresses featured heavily, as did over-sized sleeves and printed fur. I adored the rich colours and floral jacquard dress.
Tory Burch
One of the queens of NYFW presented a rich and vibrant collection full of bold prints. Bursts of orange and blue created a superb ground for folkloric, floral and nautical patterns. The wonderful collection of eclectic prints were inspired by 'classic America' with free-spirited West Coast vibes. Sure to be some of the most coveted pieces of the season, each look was both wearable and perfect for summer. Street style and instagram worthy.
Proenza Schouler
Primary colours and cut-outs were the order of the day at the Proenza show. The artisan here was exceptional - intarsia fur, woven leather dresses and ostrich feather checked tops. Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez also played with volume. Architectural skirts were made from plisse and had asymmetric hems. The knotted dresses were a key look, as were the earrings.
Monse
As one of the fastest rising brands in fashion, Monse has become known for it's shirting. I loved that this season the design duo behind the helm of the brand (and also the newly appointed creative directors at Oscar de la Renta) Fernando Garcia and Laura Kim, experimented sequins and shape. Cargo pants were unexpected as evening wear but worked exceptionally well. The red, white and blue colour combination was another nod to the impending US election.
Rodarte
The key theme here was Bees...yes really. Honeycomb layering and an abundance of tulle added a dramatic element to the Mulleavy sisters SS17 offering. Metallic's ran through the collection in the form of both fabrication and embellishment. Floral prints, with a 70's feel, were presented on lightweight fabrics and were amongst my favourite looks in the collection.
Milly
This season Michelle Smith was focusing on pure fabrics and sensuality. There was as much focus on the back of the garments as there was on the front. Bows, straps and cut-outs made for a beautifully feminine collection. Lavender Blue and soft greens were the key colours used throughout and the use of shirting was also prominent. Loose geometrics and soft monochrome palms were sparsely injected into the collection. One of the most perfect summer collections seen at NYFW this season. Love!
Victoria Beckham
Velvet for Spring? Yes, that was the fabric of choice at Victoria Beckham this season. The stunning crushed velvet came in an incredible array of colours including lavender and turquoise. Many of the pieces in this collection had a slouchy and relaxed feel to them - a million miles away from the structured dresses we used to see when VB started her fashion brand. There was also an emphasis on bra's - seen partially worn under dresses and as stand alone bralette's. The soft floral prints were also beautifully executed and are sure to be popular.
Marc Jacobs
Most likely to be a love or hate collection, there is no denying the impact of the Marc Jacobs show. A riot of colour, texture, layering and volume - Marc Jacobs closed NYFW in spectacular fashion. Aside from the multi-coloured dreadlocks and sky high platforms, the clothes were constructed from metallic fabrics, high shine satin, suede and a splash of fur. The prints were in fact illustrations by the artist Julie Verhoeven.

Fall 16 Trend - Jacquard

When it comes to Fall fabrics, this season it doesn't come more appropriate than jacquard. Jacquard's were revolutionized in the 18th Century and since then have always been synonymous with richness and depth - so it is easy to see their relevance in luxury fashion. Woven with traditional patterns, often in metallic yarns, jacquard was the fabric of choice for many of the top luxury brands when showcasing their A/W 16 collections. Seen on the runway at the likes of Gucci, Prada and Burberry Prorsum, this season jacquard's are woven with traditional floral motifs and Oriental decoration. Colours are apt for Fall; Bordeaux, Red, Olive and Oxford Blue.
Jacquard is a fabric largely reserved for our Autumn wardrobes, as it has nods to the festive season, meaning that many people are unsure how to wear it as we do not see it during the rest of the year. As jacquard is a fairly bold choice, the key to styling is to keep the rest of your outfit paired down. Team a jacquard skirt with a classic knitted top or polo-neck. If you opt to wear a jacquard dress, then keep accessories simple; a black pair of heels will complete your outfit perfectly. This way you are making your jacquard pieces versatile enough to be worn during the day. Shop my edit of the best premium jacquard pieces currently available...
1. F.R.S £695 / 2. Whistles £160 / 3. Anna Sui £420
4. Malone Souliers £485 / 5. Topshop £65 / 6. Gucci £485
7. Giambattista Valli £775 / 8. Jane Carr £180 / 9. Burberry £1295

Established in 2014 and based in the heart of Notting Hill, contemporary eveningwear brand Galvan has four founding members from the world of contemporary art and fashion. Galvan was born out of a want to create effortless eveningwear which was timeless and versatile enough to be worn again and again, and be styled in different ways. Stepping away from over-embellished pieces, Galvan instead focuses on high quality fabrics and clean silhouettes - many of which were inspired by 90's supermodels. Street Style Trend - Graphic T-Shirts

One of the cheapest and most accessible ways to buy into a luxury brand is to shop basics. This season the graphic tee is one of the most sought after street style looks to get on-board with, and several of the biggest brands in luxury fashion have gone big on this trend. Coming in at a more affordable price point than other pieces in a mainline collection, these t-shirts offer brands the chance to sell high volumes of an easy to manufacture garment all with a healthy profit margin. Whilst you can readily shop licensed branded tee's from your favourite band or film franchise, the 2016 graphic t-shirt trend is all about obscure imagery and sometimes puerile motifs and slogans. Key Designers: Vetements, Off-White, Loewe and Christopher Kane
Brands such as: Givenchy, Kenzo and Milly have become synonymous with their graphic tee's, which they reinterpret each season in different colours and with varying new styles. Being a simple cotton tee, means that styling is super easy. Throw on with a pair of jeans and you can't go far wrong. Shop my edit of the best graphic t-shirts currently available from the luxury market...
1. Kenzo - £10 / 2. Loewe - £225 / 3. Off-White - £195
4. Etoile Isabel Marant  - £65 / 5. Etre Cecile - £70 / 6. Opening Ceremony - £130

Outfit of The Month - September

This month I have drawn inspiration from a few different places. Firstly, metallic pleated skirts are a huge trend for Pre-Fall 16 so I wanted to style my outfit around one of the most coveted styles from Christopher Kane. With this skirt as my starting point I began looking at tops. Wanting to mix things up a little this month I have opted for a jumper from HADES emblazoned with 'Patti Smith'. I discovered this brand by chance whilst shopping in Liberty, later realising that Alexa Chung wore 'The Smiths' jumper from the same brand at Glastonbury. HADES is sure to be one of the most sought after brands of the next few seasons - their ultra cool knitwear adds serious kudos to any outfit. Inspiration for this pleated skirt/jumper combo also came from Gucci, who we have seen sending countless models down the runway in a similar look. Playing on the idea of incorporating different silhouettes and fabrics into the outfit, I have paired the look with a boxy tweed blazer. Continuing this masculine feel, I have added a pair of platform brogues and a structured bag.
